Marine Scholarships of China 2024 for International Students
The Marine Scholarship of China, launched by the State Oceanic Administration (SOA) and the Ministry of Education (MOE) of China, is now open for 2024-2025 applications. Eligible students from countries near South China Sea, Pacific & Indian Oceans, and African developing countries can apply for the fully funded Marine scholarships and pursue master’s or doctoral degrees for free in marine science related fields.

Additionally, with the help of partner universities, including Xiamen University, Zhejiang University, Ocean University of China, & Tongji University, awardees of Marine Scholarships will get financial support in terms of fee waivers, living allowance, and medical insurance throughout the study period. - Accommodation: Students can either live on campus for free or receive a monetary subsidy to help cover the cost of living off-campus.

- Living Allowance: Master’s students will receive RMB 3,000/month, while doctoral students will get RMB 3,500/month to manage daily living expenses.

Applicants aiming for a master’s degree under this scholarship must hold a bachelor’s degree in a related field. Similarly, for a doctoral degree, a master’s degree in a relevant area is a must. Meanwhile, the age limit of interested applicants for Master’s program is below 40 years; and under 45 years is for Doctoral programs. Moreover, non-Chinese citizens who are in good health and hail from coastal, island countries, or African developing nations are eligible too.
Duration of the Marine Scholarship Programs
The duration of the scholarship varies depending on the level of study:
- Master’s Programs: These programs typically last between 2 to 3 years. However, for students enrolled in Chinese-taught master’s programs, a prerequisite is passing the HSK 5 test with a score higher than 180. If you haven’t met this requirement, you’ll need to undergo one year of Chinese language training, extending the scholarship duration by an additional year.
- Doctoral Programs: The doctoral programs under this scholarship are designed to be completed in 4 years.
Study Majors Offered Under the Marine Scholarship of China:
The Marine Scholarship provides an array of exciting study majors, like Geophysics, Physical Oceanography, Marine Chemistry, Marine Biology, Marine Geology, Marine Physics, Marine Biotechnology, etc.
However, students under this scholarship can pursue their postgraduate education in the above-mentioned fields at some of China’s most renowned institutions, including the School of Civil Engineering, the School of Ocean and Earth Science, the College of Electronics and Information Engineering, and School of Environmental Science and Engineering.
How to Apply for the Marine Scholarship of China 2024?
Applying for the Marine Scholarship of China consists of two online applications:
For First Application:
Go to the China Scholarship Council website, complete the online application form by choosing ‘Type B’ for the Program Category. Then use the institutional codes of the chosen universities, like Xiamen University: 10384, Zhejiang University: 10335, Ocean University of China: 10423, Tongji University: 10247, and lastly, sign the form, once it is completely filled.
For Second Application:
Visit the selected university official website, like Tongji University or Xiamen University and fill another form here for International Students, then sign it and submit it to the relevant authority.
Send Your Documents:
Gather all the documents listed below and email these documents to the address of chosen university application portal, like pfliu@tongji.edu.cn for Tongji University. However, for Xiamen university, there is no such requirements of emailing documents.
Selection Process for Marine Scholarships of China:
The candidates’ selection for Marine Scholarship of China is a thorough process in which the panel of some experts will review each applicant’s work experience, educational background, research accomplishments, academic skills, & recommendations from supervisors. Those who make it through this initial review are then shortlisted and sent to China’s Ministry of Natural Resources and the CSC for the final decision. The chosen candidates will be announced around May 2024, and soon after, they will receive their Visa Application Form (JW201) & Admission Notice.

The application due date for the Marine Scholarships is from November 20, 2023, to January 20, 2024. Make sure to submit your application within this period!
