HDR Scholarship 2025 at Curtin University

Curtin University has officially announced the 2024 HDR Scholarship for PhD students interested in soil science and restoration ecology. Applications are now open for a unique opportunity to join an Indigenous-led research project that tackles one of the most pressing issues in environmental science: seed processing and germination for recalcitrant species.

Scholarship Overview

This exciting PhD project is part of the ARC Industrial Transformation and Training Centre for Healing Country, where the selected candidate will collaborate with Indigenous communities, industry partners, and research users. The project focuses on developing innovative and scalable technologies for seed processing, supported by groundbreaking treatments to break dormancy in seeds that are notoriously difficult to germinate.

Who Can Apply?

Both current and future students are eligible to apply, provided they meet the following criteria:

  • Degree Requirements: Applicants must hold a First or Upper Second-Class Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent), or a Master’s degree in a related science field (ecology, environment, soil, agriculture, precision agriculture, biological sciences).
  • Skills and Expertise: Candidates must demonstrate a strong understanding of soil processes, restoration ecology, and the soil carbon cycle. Applicants should also be proficient in laboratory analysis, statistical methods, and have a solid grasp of Australian native flora.
  • Collaboration: The successful candidate will need to be personable and collaborative, with a willingness to work closely with Indigenous communities and research teams, conduct fieldwork, and engage in scientific writing and publication.

Scholarship Details

  • Stipend: $35,000 p.a. for up to 3.5 years.
  • International Students: PhD tuition fees offsets will apply for successful international candidates.
  • Study Area: This scholarship is open to any HDR student studying ecological restoration and carbon with a relevant science background.
  • Full-Time Requirement: The scholarship supports full-time enrolment only.

Application Process

Applicants are encouraged to submit their Expression of Interest (EOI) including:

  • Academic merit
  • Curriculum vitae and publication list
  • Two academic references
